Clinical Training
Clinical training includes outpatient evaluation and hospital activities. Areas of specialized training will focus on open and arthroscopic treatment of patients. Rotations concentrate on shoulder reconstruction, elbow reconstruction, shoulder arthroscopy, and elbow arthroscopy. Participation in trauma-related activities is encouraged and facilitated.
We provide a balanced exposure to shoulder and elbow problems and adjust the rotation schedule based on each fellow’s anticipated needs and previous background and training.
Didactic Training
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are integral parts of the Adult Upper Extremity Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of the following opportunities:
- Thursday Morning Upper Extremity Case Conference – fellow is responsible for organizing and presenting cases
- Thursday Morning Journal Club
- Monday Morning Grand Rounds
- Multiple other teaching conferences in both basic science (Biomechanics, Gail Analysis, Tissue Engineering, Cartilage and Soft Tissue) and clinical topics that may interest you.
You will also be provided a detailed reading list to be completed throughout the year, as well as some shoulder and elbow textbooks.
Research Training
Research is a prominent part of our program, enhanced by carefully monitored patient registries and close cooperation with the basic science laboratories, division of statistics, and medical illustrators.
Call Frequency
There is no in-house call schedule.
Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of the fellowship. Each quarter, the consultants complete two core competency forms about your performance, along with an evaluation form.
These will be shared with you at the end of the quarter and then filed away permanently. The program director also meets with each fellow semiannually to discuss progress during the year and to address concerns that may arise.
Teaching Opportunities
Teaching opportunities may be available when a medical student or junior resident is assigned to certain services, as well as during teaching conferences.
