Program Description
Mayo Clinic offers one of the finest ophthalmology residency training programs in the world. The program covers years PGY-2 through PGY-4 of postgraduate medical training and gives you a solid foundation for further subspecialty training or a career in clinical practice, research or academic medicine. The training includes inpatient and outpatient ophthalmology, ophthalmic pathology, ophthalmic surgery, a didactic lecture series and research.

This integrative three-year residency offers:

  • Comprehensive training that prepares you for a career in clinical practice or academic medicine
  • Extensive didactic training
  • Numerous clinical and laboratory research opportunities, with an extensive database for epidemiological studies
  • Rotations as a chief resident at medical facilities in Minneapolis, Minn. and Rochester, Minn.
  • Thorough preparation for certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology

At Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, you'll experience a steady flow of patients, readily accessible faculty, cutting-edge research and an environment in which intellectual curiosity is vigorous and encouraged.

Following the first year of broad-based clinical exposure, you will begin two core years of ophthalmology training. Throughout the program, there are dedicated formal lectures and seminars, which continue through the academic year. A journal club is held as part of our organized lecture series.

You will attend a number of conferences throughout the year and are encouraged to make presentations at national and international ophthalmic meetings. The curriculum, encompassing three years of training, includes dedicated research time, electives and in-depth exposure to subspecialties.

Your progress will be monitored in the clinics, operating room and teaching sessions and by practice oral examinations.

Accreditation
The training program fulfills the requirements for training as stated by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical Education.

Certification
You will be eligible to take the American Board of Ophthalmology’s examination for certification in ophthalmology upon completion of the residency.

Program History
The Ophthalmology Residency began in 1914, and since that time, more than 410 physicians have completed training.
