Positions
There are four positions available in Mayo Clinic's Ophthalmology Residency Program each year. Appointments are made through the Ophthalmology Matching Program (OMP).
Several PGY-1 positions are available at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota or Mayo Clinic in Arizona for appointees to the Ophthalmology Residency Program. Appointments to these PGY-1 positions are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
How to Apply
To apply to the Ophthalmology Residency, you must first register with the Ophthalmology Matching Program (OMP). If you are considering a residency in ophthalmology, you should become acquainted as early as possible with the matching program and the timetable for application procedures. In early January, applicants and training programs submit their ranking lists to the OMP. Results from the match are announced at the end of January for the July 1 appointments of the following year.
The ophthalmology match for PGY-2 positions occurs in January, several weeks before the deadline for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) match for PGY-1 positions. Thus, applicants will know their ophthalmology results before they submit their NRMP rank list.
Applications for each academic year should be completed by September 19, approximately 20 months before the program begins. The academic year begins in early July.
Step 1: To apply to the program, visit the Central Application Service (CAS) application forms.
The application requires the following information:
- Official medical school transcripts
- Official test transcripts for all applicable examinations (USMLE, LMCC, COMLEX, NBOME, FMGEMS, FLEX or NBME)
- A dean's letter and at least two other letters of recommendation
- A curriculum vitae
- A personal statement
- A valid ECFMG certificate (if you graduated from medical school outside of the United States)
- A copy of your medical school diploma (if you have graduated from medical school)
Step 2: Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited to visit Mayo Clinic for a personal interview with the program director and selected faculty. Interviews are conducted between November and December of each year prior.
For applicants applying as part of the 2008 Match, we will interview on the following dates:
