Program Description
The two-year Retinal and Vitreous Surgery Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota provides broad exposure to the vitreoretinal specialty.
During the fellowship, the trainee will be exposed to and learn tumor diagnosis and management, evaluation and management of ocular inflammatory and vascular chorioretinal diseases, and management of age related macular degeneration among other conditions. The trainee will acquire skills in scleral buckling and vitreous surgery, photocoagulation, cryotherapy, and interpretation of fluorescein angiograms, ocular coherence tomography (OCT), ultrasonography and retinal electrodiagnostic studies.
As part of the program, you will assist or participate in one-third to one-half of the vitreoretinal surgical procedures that occur at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The program offers the postgraduate ophthalmologist the time and experience necessary to care for patients with vitreoretinal diseases in either a private or an academic practice environment. Additionally, VR Magic's EYE SI vitreoretinal surgery simulator is incorporated into surgical instruction. The simulator allows fellows to develop surgical skills and experience in a non-operating room setting.
Program History
The Retinal and Vitreous Surgery Fellowship began in 1977, and since that time, more than 15 physicians have completed training. It is anticipated that one fellow will complete training in this program once every two years. An emphasis has been placed on training international fellows that return to their native country for their practice.
