Qualifications
Senior medical students interested in a neurosurgical residency
at Mayo Clinic are encouraged to apply for an externship rotation,
usually one-month long, through Mayo Medical School. The externship
gives one an opportunity to become familiar with neurosurgery at
Mayo Clinic and allows the neurosurgery faculty the opportunity
to get to know you.
Progressive resident responsibility in all subspecialty areas is
the major educational priority of the Department of Neurosurgery.
So as to not compromise the resident experience, especially at the
senior and chief resident levels, no subspecialty fellowships are
offered at Mayo Clinic. Accordingly, there is no dilution of surgical
cases - all are available to the neurosurgical residents.
There are one to two year slots available to both foreign residents
or those from other United States institutions in clinical neurosurgery.
These are available for senior level residents or post-residency
neurosurgeons designed to enhance their expertise. These special
fellows participate in clinical rotations and call schedules but
do not progress to the chief resident level.
Appointments for the Special Fellowship in clinical neurosurgery
are made through interviews, letters of recommendations and advance
arrangements with the applicant's program director.
