Program Description
The one-year Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases Fellowship Program at Mayo Clinic in Arizona provides training in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of stroke and all types of cerebrovascular disorders. 

The fellowship is specifically designed for those who wish to pursue a career in academic neurology or in a group or private practice.

Throughout the fellowship, you will be exposed topatients with ischemic and hemorrhagic cerebrovascular diseases.Patients arereferred directly to the Department of Neurology byMayo Clinic physicians,physicians at other health-care facilitiesand the emergency medicine specialists ofMayo Clinic Hospital’s Acute Stroke Service.

The Cerebrovascular Neurology Fellowship Program includes both didactic and clinical experiences, training you to:

  • Acquire the necessary cerebrovascular history
  • Conduct a focused cerebrovascular neurological exam
  • Order and interpret neuroradiological imaging and tests
  • Assess eligibility for thrombolysis and mechanical thrombus retrieval in acute stroke patients
  • Assess eligibility for enrollment into acute stroke trials
  • Provide inpatient post stroke care
  • Manage secondary stroke prevention
  • Assess eligibility for enrollment into secondary stroke prevention trials
  • Interact with a multidisciplinary hospital based stroke team
  • Conduct clinical research
  • Teach other medical trainees

As a stroke fellow, you will have research opportunities in the area of cerebrovascular diseases.

Program History
The Stroke & Cerebrovascular Diseases Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Arizona was established in 2005 and will accept its first fellow in 2006. It is anticipated that going forward, one trainee will complete this fellowship annually.
