Global Health Preparation: Short Courses and Online

There are several one- to three-week courses that give an overview of cross-cultural health and medical issues and an introduction to core tropical medicine topics. They are quite valuable for understanding the broad range of health interventions employed in global health.

Course on International Health: Clinical and Community Care

Ron Pust, a professor of family medicine, initiated this course in 1982 and continues to coordinate it. Although taken mostly by medical students contemplating a summer international experience, it is an excellent, interactive approach with a focus on community aspects of majority world health.

International Medicine (INMED) Intensive Course

This intensive two-week course is held every June and began in 2006. Content includes international public health, diseases of poverty, cross-cultural competence and leadership.

  • When: June each year (usually the middle two weeks)

International Medicine (INMED) Self-Paced Courses

INMED offers online courses that offer CME credits in international public health, diseases of poverty, disaster medicine arrangement, international HIV medicine, international health leadership and cross-cultural competency.

USAID Global Health eLearning Center

A long list of thorough online courses and certificates, each designed to take six to nine months. The most commonly accessed courses are HIV Basics, M&E Fundamentals, Malaria, Antenatal Care, Diarrheal Disease, Youth Reproductive Health, Family Planning 101, and Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV.

Equip International: Missionary Medicine Intensive

The training consists of detailed presentations of the most common diseases seen in majority world settings, emphasizing diagnosis and treatment in resource-constrained settings.
