Program Description
The one-year Surgical Pathology Fellowship Program at Mayo
Clinic in Rochester offers an opportunity for you to evaluate and
learn from an exceptionally diverse amount of pathology material.
This fellowship offers training in an academic medical center that
processes more than 100,000 surgical cases and 125,000 cytology
cases annually. An additional 50,000 consultative cases are referred
each year by pathologists from within the United States and around
the world. The diagnostic material includes specimens from all fields
in pathology.
As a surgical pathology fellow at Mayo Clinic in Rochester , you
will participate in the daily diagnostic sign-out and handle a portion
of the consultation material. Your rotation schedule will include
intensive training in our frozen section laboratories with examination
of both routine and unusual neoplastic and non-neoplastic specimens
.
A minimum of four elective months are also available for subspecialty
training in a number of different areas including bone and soft
tissue pathology, cardiovascular pathology, cytopathology, gastrointestinal
and hepatobiliary pathology, pulmonary pathology and many others.
Opportunities for collaborative research are available in all subspecialty
areas. You will also present cases at various clinico-pathologic
conferences and assume some responsibility for teaching residents
and medical students.
Program History
The Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester
began in 1919. Since then, 150 fellows have completed their training
in this program. Going forward, it is anticipated that eight trainees
will complete the program each year.
