Program Description
The Mayo Clinic offers a one- or two-year Hematopathology Fellowship
Program that will prepare you for a career in the diagnostic and
research aspects of hematopathology. Your training will combine
lymph node and bone marrow pathology with experience in a busy clinical
laboratory, and you will have the opportunity to study a wide variety
of hematologic and lymphoid disorders.
During your training, you will be exposed to the entire spectrum
of laboratory hematology, including:
- Automated cell counting
- Reticulocyte counting
- Morphologic evaluation of blood smears
and bone marrow specimens
- Detection and characterization of red
blood cell abnormalities, including
hemoglobinopathies, thalassemias, enzyme deficiencies and membrane
disorders
- Thrombosis and hemostasis
- Lymph node pathology
In addition, the ancillary techniques of cytochemistry, immunohistochemistry,
flow cytometry, flourescence in situ hybridization and molecular
genetics will be an integral part of the fellowship.
Additional training in the areas of transfusion medicine and/or
cytogenetics is possible.
Certification
When you successfully complete this program, you will meet the hematology
certification requirements of The
American Board of Pathology .
Program History
The Hematopathology Fellowship was accredited in 1990 and since that
time, 15 trainees have completed their training in this program. It
is anticipated that one or two fellows will complete Mayo Clinic's
Hematopathology Fellowship each year.
