Support
of scholarship and educational programs has been a primary goal
of the Mayo Clinic medical library system that has grown since its
founding in 1907 to become among the most comprehensive in North
America.
The Mayo libraries are completely automated and staff and students
have access to traditional collections at all campus sites and to
the online databases and full-text books and journals of the Mayo
Digital Library on a 24/7 basis.
Mayo Digital Library resources networked to all campus locations
include 2,600 e-journals and over 100 e-books. Selected electronic
resources include the full suite of Micromedex drug information
databases, Ovid Medline and other databases, Web of Science, UpToDate,
MD Consult, and a variety of other databases and full-text resources.
Traditional collections include subscriptions to over 4,000 scientific
and medical journal titles (of which 2,600 are available in full-text
system-wide) and a print archive of 380,000 volumes. An efficient
document delivery system, including electronic document delivery
to the desktop, moves traditional resources including print and
AV to any Mayo location where they are needed for scholarship and
learning.
Mayo librarians provide a full range of training and mediated user
services: online database training, expert literature research for
staff and students, consultation on online retrieval strategy, reference
consultation, and evidence-based medicine training. Mayo libraries
participate in regional and national interlibrary loan networks
including the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and can
obtain material not owned or accessed by a Mayo library from a variety
of university and commercial sources.
