Juan Bowen, M.D.
Assistant Program Director
Consultant, Primary Care Internal Medicine and Geriatrics
Dr. Bowen was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and raised mostly in Columbus, Ohio. He attended Ohio State for undergraduate studies, and then Case Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland. At Mayo since 1992, his professional interests have focused on medical education and patient advocacy.

Denise Dupras, M.D.
Associate Program Director
Consultant, Primary Care Internal Medicine
Dr. Dupras grew up in upper Michigan and pursued her medical education at Mayo Clinic, which was supplemented by post-graduate training in pharmacology. As a generalist in the Division of Primary Care Internal Medicine, her passion has focused on the art of the physical exam, the practice of evidence-based medicine, and on measurements of clinical competency.

Randy Edson, M.D.
Associate Program Director
Consultant, Infectious Diseases
Dr. Edson was born in New York, received his undergraduate degree and Master's degree in music from Yale and his M.D. from the University of Iowa. He joined Mayo in 1975 and has been a member of the Infectious Disease Faculty for 25 years where his scholarship has focused on the optimal use of antibiotic therapies. As an Associate Program Director for over 20 years, his focus within the residency program has been on the evaluation process for residents and on career counseling.

Bob Ficalora, M.D.
Senior Associate Program Director
Consultant, General Internal Medicine
Dr. Ficalora grew up in New York, in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx, and attended medical school at SUNY Stony Brook. He spent the next twenty years in New England, where he learned to restore antiques, perfected his home improvement skills, began raising his five children, and directed student clerkships, residency programs and a Geriatric fellowship. At Mayo since the year 2000, his professional passions include medical education, the breadth of ambulatory general internal medicine, practice management and office procedures. Nationally, he has been a member of the leadership team for the Association of Program Directors of Internal Medicine and currently serves on the advisory group for the Electronic Residency Application Service.

Kyle Klarich, M.D.
Associate Program Director
Consultant, Cardiology
Dr. Klarich grew up near Grand Rapids, Michigan and obtained her undergraduate as well as M.D. degrees from Michigan State University. At Mayo Clinic since 1991, she holds an appointment in the division of Cardiology where her focus has been on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease and heart disease in women.

Joseph C. Kolars, M.D.
Emeritus Program Director
Consultant, Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Originally from Minnesota, Dr. Kolars obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Minnesota and remained in the Twin Cities for his Internal Medicine Residency Training.  He went on to pursue Gastroenterology training at the University of Michigan where he joined the faculty and eventually took over the position as Residency Program Director for the Department of Medicine.  From 1996 to 1999 he lived in Shanghai China with his family to help establish a new health care system.  He joined Mayo Clinic in 1999 and served as Residency Program Director from 2002 to 2007.  His scholarship is largely focused on medical education and educational outcomes.  His other major focus is global health education and he’s involved in a growing number of initiatives with other centers world wide. 

Mark Lee, M.D.
Associate Program Director
Consultant, General Internal Medicine
Dr. Lee grew up in Southern California and pursued his medical education in Chicago. He completed his Internal Medicine training at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale and later served as Chief Medical Resident. A member of the general medicine division that cares for patients from the local region, his scholarly focus has been on medical education with a special interest on training of medical teachers, clinical skills exams, and professionalism. Dr. Lee has completed additional training as a facilitator for the Stanford Faculty Development Program and he is the recipient of multiple 'teacher of the year' awards. In 2005 he was inducted into the Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year Hall of Fame.

Ruben Mesa, M.D.
Assistant Program Director
Consultant, Hematology
Dr. Mesa grew up in Chicago and obtained his undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering and physiology from the University of Illinois in Champaign, Urbana. He subsequently came to Mayo Clinic where he obtained his medical degree along with training first in internal medicine and subsequently in hematology and medical oncology. His scholarship has focused on the chronic myeloproliferative disorders (evaluating novel therapeutics, implementing clinical trials, working with quality of life studies, and very actively involved with national patient groups). He has lectured both nationally and internationally on these disorders.

Adamarie Multari, M.D.
Assistant Program Director
Consultant, Executive Health Program
Dr. Multari was born and raised in New York City and obtained her M.D. degree from the University of North Dakota. At Mayo since 1992, she has a busy consultative internal medicine practice. She is a leader in efforts at Mayo to optimize our commitment to professionalism. She is widely recognized by her peers as one of Mayo's most compassionate and popular physicians.


Jeff Rabatin, M.D. M.Sc
Assistant Program Director
Consultant, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine

Dr. Rabatin grew up in Minneapolis, attended medical school at Georgetown University and completed his post-graduate training in Pulmonary and Critical Care at Mayo with advanced training in Evidence-Based Medicine and Health Research Methodology at McMaster University. Professionally, his areas of focus are COPD, Critical Care, clinical ethics, end-of-live care, and Physician-Patient-Family communication. He is a member of the Mayo Critical Care Educator Hall of Fame.

Kris Thomas, M.D.
Associate Program Director
Consultant, Primary Care Internal Medicine
Dr. Thomas grew up on the Olympic peninsula in Washington State, obtaining her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and her M.D. degree from Mayo Medical School. She is a general internist in the Division of Primary Care Internal Medicine and is the director of the Internal Medicine resident continuity clinics. Her scholarship has focused on medical education with a special focus on evidence-based medicine, practice-based learning and systems-based practice.
