Program Description
The three-year Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mayo Clinic in Florida offers:
- University-based practice in an academic setting with a focus on a three-shield approach to training: patient care, education and research
- Emphasis on clinical essentials and evidence-based medicine in primary care, subspecialty training and research
- Extensive experience in primary care and subspecialty clinics led by a strong group of general internists and sub-specialists
- Strict adherence to ACGME duty hour restrictions through use of a q6 overnight call night float system on all ward teams
- Autonomy for patient care with a faculty to resident ratio of 4:1
- An integrated, comprehensive didactic curriculum involving morning reports, grand rounds, noon conferences, ambulatory conferences, article analyses, one-on-one lectures and a weekly board review for third year residents
- American Board of Internal Medicine board pass rate of 100 percent
- Fully integrated, computerized and interactive medical record system involving both the inpatient and outpatient setting
- Opportunities to manage solid organ and bone marrow transplant patients in ambulatory and critical care settings
- Research opportunities such as senior projects, performance measures, case reports, clinical trials and other avenues of interest dictated by the resident
- Clinical or research electives at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and Mayo Clinic in Arizona
- An established program of mentorship and staff advisors involving senior residents, assistant professors, full professors for all residents
- Superb fellowship matching rate into competitive programs across the nation with Mayo Clinic in Florida offering fellowships in gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, pulmonary, sleep medicine and endocrinology
- Other planned fellowships at Mayo Clinic in Florida include critical care, cardiology and infectious diseases
Program History
The Internal Medicine Residency began in 1995, and since that time, 70 physicians have completed training. It is anticipated that eight residents will complete training in this program annually.
