MISSION STATEMENT:
To train physicians who deliver excellent patient care using the art and science of internal medicine.
INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY OVERVIEW Mayo Clinic has a long history of national leadership and leading-edge innovation in patient care, research, education, health policy, and patient safety. Our primary value is “the needs of the patient come first,” while our core principles champion quality, compassionate care, teamwork, mutual respect, and professionalism.
Patient care focuses on multi-specialty integration, an unhurried examination, coordinating physicians, and availability of the most advanced technology.
Our learning environment maximizes opportunities for personal achievement in a comfortable, supportive, nurturing, academically focused, and scholastically challenging environment.
The training experience focuses on the core of internal medicine, emphasizing evidence-based medicine and development of strong analytical skills. Graduates are well prepared to become practicing clinicians, academic scientists, clinician educators, and future leaders in medicine. Our unique mentoring program is part of a coordinated process designed to maximize fellowship opportunities.
We offer extensive personal contact with faculty, a 4:1 faculty-to-resident ratio, and exposure to all internal medicine disciplines. Ten internal medicine fellowships complement the residency program, with additional fellowships under consideration. Excellent resident camaraderie, morale, and junior-senior teaching have been critical to our success.
The patient population is extensive and diverse, with common as well as complex and esoteric patient problems.
Our program is affiliated with other Mayo sites in Minnesota and Arizona, offering opportunities for unique individualized training experiences. We benefit by being a major part of our large and well-established national practice, education, and research enterprise - yet maintaining a climate of intimacy and personal attention. We recognize the importance of balancing challenging careers with the need for personal and family time.
