Mayo Clinic Hospital, opened April 2008, is a state-of-the-art facility designed to facilitate residency education, with ample teaching spaces, proximally-located call rooms, wide patient unit corridors, advanced technology, and a fully electronic patient record, order entry, and radiology system. Hospital, outpatient specialties, and resident continuity clinic are physically connected, while basic science research buildings and inpatient hospice unit are within walking distance on the same campus.
Residents have close contact with an engaged and committed faculty. Members of the Department of Medicine publish and lecture extensively, facilitating a high level of resident scholarly activity. There are also a large numbers of active NIH-funded clinical trials, as well as on-site basic science research in cancer and neuroscience.
The attendings on the inpatient general medicine rotation are generalists, hospitalists, and subspecialists.
One of the unique advantages to working in the Mayo system is a rich heritage of immediate pager access to our best experts across the Mayo network. Residents can feel comfortable seeking advice from any team member, regardless of a physician’s position or location.
The Department of Medicine regularly invites national and international academic faculty members to Grand Rounds and other lecture settings; and residents are encouraged to take full advantage of these learning opportunities.
