More than 30 physicians at Mayo Clinic in Rochester specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of adult and pediatric infectious diseases.  The Division of Infectious Diseases offers the following specialized services:

  • Hospital-Based Consultation -- offers specialized treatment for patients who are hospitalized with infections or who develop infections while hospitalized. We have a large inpatient practice, which at any given time has a census of 100 patients. Our entire faculty participates in clinical "focus groups" which provide specialized care to a subgroup of infectious disease patients that at the same time academically helps staff develop expertise in the focused areas of infectious diseases that they participate in. The inpatient infectious diseases "focus groups" include general infectious diseases group, intensive care unit infectious diseases group, two orthopedic infectious diseases groups, solid organ and hematopoietic cell transplantation infectious diseases group, neurosurgery infectious diseases, Hematology/Oncology infectious diseases.
  • Outpatient Infectious Disease Consultation -- offers specialized evaluations for patients referred by their physicians for the evaluation and management of suspected or proven infections. You will have a one half-day per week clinic assignment to provide you with the ambulatory care experience in Infectious Diseases.
  • The Mayo Clinic HIV Clinic -- provides specialized treatment for patients who have been exposed to, or diagnosed with, HIV or AIDS.
  • Travel and Tropical Medicine Clinic -- educates and immunizes people traveling to foreign countries and treats patients returning from a foreign country with an illness.

Faculty
In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's Infectious Diseases faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge.

The Mayo ID faculty possesses the requisite Infectious Diseases expertise and competence in clinical care and teaching abilities to instruct and supervise adequately all fellows in the program. They demonstrate a strong interest in the education of fellows, and support the goals and objectives of Mayo's Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program.

The staff has published and lectured extensively and are well regarded in their field. You will have direct access to these individuals throughout your training program.  Mayo ID faculty have established and maintained an environment of inquiry and scholarship. The Mayo ID Fellowship Program has an active research component as part of the program.

Advisors and Mentors
You are assigned to a faculty mentor at the start of your fellowship. Your mentor will  provide career guidance, advice and personal support. Your advisor also will serve as a contact point, introducing you and your family to Rochester and the Mayo Clinic system.

Visiting Professors
Many prominent nationally or internationally renowned professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work and share information in many venues. For example, during Grand Rounds, noon and/or morning lectures, hospital rounds, a special Infection and Immunity Research Club, and by meeting with subspecialty fellows. You are encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
