Program Description
The one- or two-year Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program offers a comprehensive education in the theoretical and practical aspects of critical care medicine that will help you develop a high level of competence in managing patients with life-threatening illnesses.

It will provide you with subspecialty training in the expert management of critically ill patients in an intensive care unit environment. You will also be trained in the management of emergencies outside of the hospital, including those that occur during transport of patients to an intensive care setting.

You will receive systematic instruction in:

  • Resuscitation of critically ill patients
  • Advanced cardiac and pediatric life support
  • Clinical features and physiology of disease states that lead to acute, life-threatening illnesses
  • Pharmacology of therapeutic agents used in critical care medicine
  • Technical skills involved in monitoring, airway maintenance, mechanical ventilation, high-frequency ventilation and bronchoscopy
  • Theory and practical management of invasive and noninvasive monitoring systems
  • Trauma and acute critical pediatric conditions (including neonates)

Accreditation
This fellowship program fulfills the requirements for critical care medicine training as stated by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical Education.

Certification
You will be eligible to take the American Board of Internal Medicine subspecialty examination in critical care upon completion of the fellowship.

Program History
The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship began in 1982, and since that time, more than 160 physicians have completed training. It is anticipated that seven to14 fellows will complete training in this program annually.
