Clinical Training
The program can be one or two years in length, depending on your career goals and the requirements of the specialty board supplying your certification. Each year of the program will include six to eight months of critical care medicine assignments. The remaining months will be filled with your choice of elective rotations in related fields.

* At least one month is spent in a "subconsultant" role, directly supervising a busy ICU team of physicians and paramedical staff.
** Electives may consist of: ICU nutrition, chest radiology, trauma, pediatric critical care, neurological/neurosurgical critical care, coronary care, nephrology critical care, bronchoscopy, chronic ventilator dependency unit, cardiovascular surgery, infectious diseases, echocardiography, sleep medicine, pulmonary function laboratory and anesthesiology.
Didactic Training
Didactic training is an integral part of the fellowship. You will attend a variety of teaching sessions, conferences and lectures. Training will include experiential learning within the Mayo Procedural Skills Laboratory and the Mayo Multidisciplinary Simulation Center.
Research Training
You will have the opportunity to participate in at least one clinical or laboratory research project during your fellowship. You are expected to complete some type of research project, for which dedicated time can be allocated.
Call Frequency
The residency call rotation may change for each rotation. Mayo Clinic College of Medicine follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Teaching Opportunities
Opportunities are available for teaching rotating residents and medical students.
Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of your program training. You will be evaluated formally by your supervising faculty member after each clinical rotation and will meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.
