Program Description
The General Internal Medicine Research Fellowship Program at
Mayo Clinic in Rochester is a two-year fellowship for board-certified
or board-eligible general internists. As a program trainee, you
will learn how to apply clinical research to improve patient care.
The fellowship offers:
- Graduate school course work in epidemiology,
outcomes research, clinical trials, qualitative research and informatics
leading to a Master of Biomedical Sciences – Clinical Research
degree.
- Opportunities for research collaboration with
experienced Mayo Clinic investigators.
- Clinical training in ambulatory medicine and
hospital-based medicine.
- Teaching in the concepts of hypothesis-driven
research and learning to apply these skills in the development
of patient-oriented clinical research.
- Training of independent clinical investigators
who have the ability to compete for extramural peer-reviewed funding.
- Improvement of clinical skills in general internal
medicine through the establishment and maintenance of a continuity
clinic and opportunity for general medicine consultations in the
hospital setting.
Program History
The General Internal Medicine Research Fellowship Program
at Mayo Clinic in Rochester has evolved from the Advanced General
Medicine Fellowship, which was established in 1987. To date, 47
fellows have completed their training in this program.
Today, the fellowship offers a more in-depth, research-focused
training experience. Three trainees are anticipated to complete
this fellowship at Mayo Clinic each year.
