Program Description
The General Internal Medicine Research Fellowship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester is a two-year fellowship for board-certified or board-eligible general internists. As a program trainee, you will learn how to apply clinical research to improve patient care.

The goal of the program is to train general internists as independent clinical investigators who have the ability to compete for extramural peer-reviewed funding.  We have existing mature research programs in:

  • Tobacco control and cancer prevention
  • Complementary and integrative medicine
  • Medical education

These are designated as committed tracks.

Qualified candidates will have the opportunity to choose one of these three research areas as committed tracks within the fellowship training.  Candidates enrolled in a committed track will have an individualized training program suited to their particular interest.

At this time, the General Internal Medicine Research Fellowship is unable to sponsor those candidates holding a J-1 Visa.

In order to achieve the Program goals, the fellowship offers:

    • Graduate school course work in epidemiology, outcomes research, clinical trials, qualitative research and informatics leading to a Master’s Degree in Clinical Research.
    • Opportunities for research collaboration with experienced Mayo Clinic investigators particularly in the areas of tobacco control and cancer prevention, complementary and integrative medicine, and medical education.
    • Teaching in the concepts of hypothesis-driven research and learning to apply these skills in the development of patient-oriented clinical research and medical education.
    • Training of independent clinical investigators who have the ability to compete for extramural peer-reviewed funding.
    • Clinical training in ambulatory medicine.
    • Improvement of clinical skills in general internal medicine through the establishment and maintenance of a continuity clinic.
