The program involves one year devoted to clinical training in pancreatology and an optional second year - dependent upon availability of funding from individual laboratories - dedicated to research in a laboratory devoted to the exocrine pancreas.
Clinical Training
The Mayo Clinic Pancreas Clinic presents a unique opportunity for training. It provides you with access for over 700 patients with suspected or proven diseases of the exocrine pancreas, including acute and chronic pancreatitis, pseudocysts, neoplastic cysts, intraductal papillary mucin tumor and pancreatic cancer.
Conferences
Apart from the GI division, GI hepatobiliary and research conferences, each laboratory holds its own weekly research conference. There also is a monthly clinical pancreatology conference held in combination with the pancreatic surgeons.
Research Training
As an advanced pancreatology fellow, you will undertake one or more clinical research protocols in patients with diseases of the exocrine pancreas. Supervision of the clinical research training is under the direction of the heads of the pancreas interest group and clinic.
Basic Research Training (optional, dependent upon funding)
One year of the advanced fellowship may be spent in one of the several laboratories with the Division of Gastroenterology that are devoted to the study of the exocrine pancreas.
Call Frequency
There is no after hours call responsibility during this fellowship.
Moonlighting
One year is spent on focused training and research, therefore moonlighting is generally not allowed.
