Qualifications
Appointments are made at the PGY-1 level through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates who are eligible for admission outside the NRMP also are given consideration. A limited number of positions may be available at the PGY-2 level.

Minimum criteria for International Medical Graduates:
To be eligible for licensing in Minnesota, which is a requirement of residency training at Mayo Clinic Rochester, you must meet all three of the criteria listed:

  1. Pass all Step exams at least on the third attempt (first attempt preferred)
  2. Have passed or will pass Step 3 within 5 years of passing Step 2 (the first of 2 parts). Do not need to have Step 3 to apply.
  3. Pass Step 2 (both parts) by rank day

In addition:

  • If graduation from medical school is greater than 3 years, then we require at least 6 months of current hands-on clinical experience; U.S. preferred
  • Must be ECFMG certified and have passed CSA before rank day
  • Mayo sponsors a J-1 Visa (have or obtain before the program start date)
  • Must have strong commitment to and evidence of experience in family medicine
  • Three letters of recommendation, one from a family physician is preferred
  • ERAS applications accepted from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31 for the 2008-09 academic year
