Clinical Research Training Program

The Endocrinology Fellowship Program consists of core clinical rotations, research opportunities and a variety of elective opportunities.

Clinical Training
Core training experiences include:

  • Inpatient and outpatient endocrinology consultations
  • Pediatric endocrinology
  • Reproductive endocrinology
  • Specialized endocrine function testing
  • Nutrition
  • Continuity specialty clinic
  • Research

Electives
A variety of elective opportunities allow you to individualize the training program in order to best meet your career goals.

Elective experiences are available in related specialties such as endocrine surgery, pathology, radiology, ophthalmology and hypertension/nephrology.

Didactic Training
Didactic training is provided on a weekly basis by endocrinology physicians and other staff with expertise in all relevant topics to endocrinology.

Conferences
Monthly conferences include case conferences, basic science, research and journal clubs which are prepared by the endocrine fellows.

Research Training
Research training includes a dedicated three month block rotation which allows the fellow to gain experience in clinical or basic science research.

Moonlighting
Moonlighting is permitted for licensed residents and fellows beyond the PGY-1 level. Moonlighting activities may be scheduled during those times when you are assigned to consultative or outpatient rotations. Moonlighting should not interfere with required learning and must not violate the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s (ACGME) work hour rules. Moonlighting should not compromise your education, but rather enhance it.

Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of your fellowship. You will be evaluated formally by your supervising faculty member after each clinical rotation. In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.

Call Frequency
Your call schedule will vary by individual rotation. Mayo follows the recommendations of the ACGME. Because much of the training is outpatient based, as is the clinical practice of endocrinology, many of the rotations do not require night call schedules.

Teaching Opportunities
Teaching opportunities include lectures prepared by fellows for internal medicine residents and supervision for endocrine consults.
