Clinical Research Training Program

During this fellowship, you will actively participate in all aspects of pre-hospital emergency care, to include pre-hospital training and education, statewide cardiovascular and trauma registry research, and EMS administration.

Clinical Training
We aim to train leaders in Emergency Medical Services, capable of providing the highest-quality care and advancing the specialty. Regardless of whether you pursue an academic, community or rural setting in which to practice, you will have the skills required to make a positive impact and to succeed.

During your one-year training, you will:

  • Receive comprehensive preparation in EMS, with exposure to high density urban EMS (Phoenix Fire Department) to rural EMS agencies
  • Participate in an active Mayo Clinic Arizona pre-hospital research team with collaboration with Mayo Clinic researchers
  • Be an active member of the statewide EMS administration, education, and policy making
  • Assume the role of co-medical director for the Scottsdale Fire Department during the fellowship (training, teaching, CQI program).

Didactic Training
The didactic training at Mayo Clinic is very strong. Emergency Medical Services fellows will be expected to participate in Mayo Clinic Arizona educational efforts through direct participation in Grand Rounds and student/resident education and research, as well as the broader statewide educational efforts focused on the community and EMS personnel.

Research Training
The research direction for EMS fellows will be in the area of acute pre-hospital cardiovascular disease, focusing on resuscitation and acute stroke interventions. You will work directly with the S.H.A.R.E. (Saving Hearts in Arizona Registry), and A.S.P.I.R.E (Arizona Stroke Prehospital Identification Registry) programs.  These two unique,  statewide cardiovascular disease networks are focused on improving survival from sudden cardiac arrest and stroke.

Through building relationships, working at the local level with the Scottsdale Fire Department, and the state level with the Arizona Department of Health Services, the EMS Fellowship will further integrate Mayo Clinic Arizona with the entire Arizona community.
