Welcome to the Mayo Clinic Emergency Medicine Residency, an exciting and dynamic program dedicated to providing the finest clinical and educational environment. Mayo Clinic is a great place for you to practice and learn the art of emergency medicine.
Our residency has been built on a strong foundation of educational excellence, one that began in 1918 when William and Charles Mayo introduced a revolutionary concept in physician training - the residency. Since establishing the country's first residency, Mayo has maintained a reputation for excellence in all of its post-graduate training programs.
Today, Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education hosts more than 1,000 residents in virtually all medical and surgical specialties.
The Department of Emergency Medicine is an independent, academic department that is chaired by Dr. Brent Asplin. In addition to running the residency, faculty members:
- Are leaders in the use of simulation to enhance the delivery of medical care
- Direct a mandatory fourth-year clerkship in emergency medicine for Mayo Medical School
- Run electives in emergency medicine for visiting medical students
- Lecture nationally and internationally
- Serve on institutional, regional and national committees
- Conduct cutting-edge research
- Innovate and collaborate to enhance the care delivered to emergency department patients
The goal of the Mayo Clinic Emergency Medicine Residency is to train emergency physicians who are compassionate, clinically proficient, patient-centered, and evidence-based in their approach. We aspire to prepare you to become a leader in your chosen community - wherever you choose to live and serve.
Like all successful organizations, what makes this place tick is not the state-of-the-art facilities or the excellent curricular and educational programming - it's the people. From the department chair, to the program and off-service faculty, to the support staff -- not to mention the phenomenal residents.
At Mayo, you will find outstanding individuals who work together as a team to offer the very best in patient care and emergency medicine education.
Enthusiastically yours,
Annie T. Sadosty, M.D.
