Students at Mayo Medical School as well as visiting medical students may rotate in the Saint Marys Hospital Emergency Department. It is a busy tertiary care ED that sees more than 75,000 patients per year.

During your student rotation, you will care for patients in all areas of the emergency department including: Critical, East and West Acute Care and Pediatrics. Students work approximately 16 shifts per month and see a very diverse patient and pathology mix.  Additionally, you will gain exposure to the prehospital setting through participation in a ride-along with Gold Cross Ambulance.  You will receive several handbooks of Emergency Medicine for your reference during the rotation.

You will acquire clinical competency through independent but supervised patient care. Students are expected to independently evaluate patients, formulate a differential diagnosis, develop a tentative diagnostic and treatment plan, and concisely discuss the patient with the supervising staff member. Together the student and staff member will determine the future course for that patient. You'll then order labs, radiographs and therapy, according to the discussion with the staff member.

During the month, you will become facile with the following procedures: phlebotomy, intravenous catheterization, urinary catheter placement and laceration repair. Beyond these basic procedures, you may perform other procedures on your patients (e.g., endotracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, arthrocentesis, etc.), depending upon the clinical situation and your experience and comfort.

During the rotation, you will attend two simulation sessions at the Mayo Simulation Center.  You will autonomously care for simulated patients in a critical environment, which would not be possible with real patients. After each case, a debrief session is held to review and discuss the management of these patients. We continually receive positive feedback from students on how helpful these sessions are. In addition, you will attend two Breakout Sessions, which include reading materials for preparation and interactive round table discussions. Topics include:

  • Chest Pain/Shortness of breath
  • Trauma
  • Toxicology
  • Shock

Non-Mayo students interested should apply for a Visiting Clerkship in Emergency Medicine. Inquiries regarding the medical student rotation may be made to:
