Clinical Training
Regardless of the option you select, you will serve as a first assistant during the clinical portion of your training. You will read slides daily with the department's consultants, and have ample independent study time to review current material and Mayo Clinic's teaching collection of over one million biopsies.
You will develop competence in many special areas of tissue examination, including:
- Cytology
- Electron microscopy
- Histochemistry
- Immunopathology
- Molecular genetics
You may arrange for a special additional rotation in electron microscopy to learn about specimen processing and the special techniques of electron immunohistochemistry and histochemistry and spend time with surgical pathologists who specialize in the evaluation of pigmented lesions, soft tissue tumors and lymphoid infiltrates.
Didactic Training
During the program you will:
- Attend a six-week mycology laboratory course in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology
- Participate in a weekly dermatopathology conference for dermatology and pathology residents
- Teach residents from other specialties who are on rotation in dermatopathology
