Elective rotations of a maximum of one month in your second and third years will be offered at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, or other approved institutions.

Rotation Descriptions

First Year
During the first year of residency, most of your clinical time will be spent in the Dermatology Clinic, where you will be closely supervised by the faculty. Throughout the year, you will spend one half-day per week engaged a comprehensive, systematic review of dermatopathology conducted by one of our dermatopathologists at the microscope.

During the afternoons, you will be assigned on one-month rotational intervals to the Hospital Consultation Service at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix .

A two-month required rotation will be performed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester at the Dermatology Inpatient Service. While on this inpatient service, you will care for an average of four inpatients, as well as phototherapy day-care patients. Due to the size of its referral practice, the inpatient service at Mayo Clinic in Rochester provides a unique experience.

During the rotation, you will learn to care for patients with serious, acute and chronic skin disorders, as well as associated systemic problems. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the Psoriasis Day Care Center and spend time in the Immunodermatology laboratory. Mayo funds the costs of your travel, housing, car rental, and licensure fees for rotations to other Mayo sites.

In this year, and all subsequent years of your training, you will spend two non-consecutive months rotating to Phoenix Children's Hospital for ongoing hands-on outpatient pediatric dermatologic patient care.

Second Year
In the second year, you will continue rotations in outpatient consultative Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, including three months of intensive one-on-one outpatient dermatologic surgery care, with exposure to advanced cutaneous surgical procedures, including laser treatments and two additional months of MohsT micrographic surgery. You will also have four months of full-day outpatient Dermatology Clinic.

Third Year
You will spend your final year in Dermatology training (PGY-4) mainly in the outpatient department, with daily supervision by the Mayo consultant staff. You will gain more experience in diagnosing and managing dermatologic conditions, and will conduct dermatology surgical procedures under the supervision of the consulting staff. You will have two months of full days in the Dermatopathology laboratory with the opportunity to work directly with our dermatopathologists.

You will have one month in your PGY-3 and PGY-4 years of elective time that can be spent in clinical research, surgery, Dermatopathology, or outpatient clinic work. You will have the opportunity to do most of the foregoing at Mayo Clinic in Rochester or Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale.

You could be involved in a clinical/pathological correlative study, clinical reports, a clinical pharmacology study, clinical research related to dermatologic surgery, or a Dermatopathology project. You also will be encouraged to submit abstracts for presentation at national meetings.

Call Frequency
Your call schedule will vary by individual rotation. Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Teaching Opportunities
You will have the opportunity to teach Mayo Medical School students and visiting students from other medical schools through bedside instruction and formal didactic lectures.

Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of your graduate training in dermatology. You will be evaluated formally by your supervising faculty members every three months. In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.

Career Development
You will meet periodically with various faculty members, administrators, and the program director to discuss your career goals. Mayo Clinic recruits many of its staff physicians from its own training programs. Thus, when you successfully complete the Dermatology Residency Program, job opportunities may be available at one of Mayo Clinic's group practices.

As graduating residents and fellows, you are an integral component of the Mayo community. We provide you with the clinical, educational and management tools to succeed in your next academic endeavor, or as you prepare to enter practice. To assist residents entering practice outside Mayo, we offer complimentary legal consultation (e.g. review of employment agreements, payor contracts, etc.) and practice management consultation (e.g. employee hiring, practice location, partnerships, billing systems, etc.).

Medical Student Clerkships
We offer a one-month clerkship for third or fourth year medical students who are interested in pursuing a dermatology residency. This rotation is not designed as an introduction to dermatology, and therefore, students must have completed a core/basic dermatology course prior to applying for this rotation.

Information regarding this Clerkship including application materials can be obtained at www.mayo.edu/mms/clerk.htm.
