The following is a typical dermatology residency rotation schedule

HIV/AIDS clinic will be conducted monthly at the Public Health
Department.
In addition to the rotations, you will have a weekly dermatologic
surgery procedure clinic as part of your experience.
Rotation Descriptions
First Year
During the first year of your residency program, most of your clinical time will be spent in the Dermatology Clinic, where you will be closely supervised by the faculty. Each week, you will spend one half day assisting with dermatologic surgery.
On a rotational basis you will be assigned to the hospital service at Mayo Hospital in Jacksonville each afternoon. This is a consultation service.
A two-month elective is available for you in the Dermatology Inpatient Service at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Your participation in this elective is strongly encouraged. Due to the size of its referral practice, Mayo Clinic's inpatient service provides a unique experience. During the rotation you will learn to care for patients with serious, acute and chronic skin disorders, as well as associated systemic problems. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the Psoriasis Day Care Center and spend time in the Immunodermatopathology Laboratory.
Second Year
During the second year, you will participate in rotations in dermatopathology, pediatrics and outpatient consultative dermatology.
This experience includes two months in the Dermatopathology Laboratory, with the opportunity to work closely with the dermatopathologist in the department.
There will also be seven months of outpatient evaluations - including patch testing - in a mentored setting. On a rotational basis , you will also provide inpatient dermatology consultations at Mayo Hospital, Jacksonville.
One month of year two will be spent at Mayo Clinic Arizona at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Additionally, one half day each week will also be in a local pediatric outpatient setting.
Two months will be spent in the Dermatology Surgery Clinic.
During the second year, three afternoons are spent at a public health department STD clinic.
Third Year
On average you will spend your final year in dermatology training (PGY-4) as a senior resident in the outpatient department, with daily supervision by the Mayo consultant staff. There will be a monthly HIV/AIDs clinic rotation. You will gain more experience in diagnosing procedures under the supervision of the consulting staff.
You will have two months of elective time that can be spent in clinical research, surgery, dermatopathology or outpatient clinic work. In selected situations, you may have the opportunity to do an approved elective at Mayo Clinic in Rochester or Mayo Clinic in Arizona.
You will have a one month a a pediatric dermatology rotation through Mayo Clinic Arizona at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital
On a rotational basis you will provide inpatient dermatology consultations at Mayo Hospital.
Didactic Training
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups,
journal clubs, and one-on-one instruction are all an integral part
of Mayo Clinic's Dermatology Residency Program.

In addition to participating in weekly conferences and national
meetings, you will complete other required didactic training which
includes:
- A lecture series in
bioethics
- Instruction in economics
and legal issues
- A two-day mycology
course
Research Training
You will be encouraged to participate in research projects
with the consulting staff. You could be involved in a clinical/pathological
correlative study, clinical reports, a clinical pharmacology study,
clinical or laboratory-based research related to dermatologic surgery,
or a dermatopathology project. You also will be encouraged to submit
abstracts for presentation at national meetings.
Call Frequency
On average you will be on call every sixth night and every sixth weekend.
Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council
for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical
skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the
course of the program. You will be evaluated formally each quarter.
In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that
your educational needs are being met.
Career Development
You will meet periodically with various faculty members, administrators
and the program director to discuss your professional goals. Mayo
Clinic recruits many of its staff physicians from its own training
programs. Thus, when you successfully complete one of the graduate
training programs in dermatology, job opportunities may be available
at one of Mayo Clinic's group practices.
