Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation - Rochester

Description:

This elective provides students with experience in both the general concepts and medical aspects of physical medicine and rehabilitation through direct patient care, educational conferences and individual study. Important components of this elective include: 1) involvement in the team approach to patients' needs, including frequent interaction with other medical and allied health personnel, 2) an introduction to the use of physical modalities and/or aids in the management of particular clinical problems, and 3) development of skills in performing physical examination of the musculoskeletal system.

Specific Goals:

Achieve working familiarity with PM&R services involved in rehabilitation for one or more of the following clinical areas:

  1. Stroke and head injuries
  2. Spinal cord injury, traumatic and/or atraumatic
  3. Rheumatologic disorders
  4. Musculoskeletal disorders
  5. Neuromuscular disorders
  6. Pain disorders, especially back and neck
  7. Multiple trauma and/or catastrophic illness

Activity Outline:

Students work up a broad variety of patients and actively participate in the evaluation, goal-setting, management and coordination of patients' rehabilitation programs. These activities take place under the direction of a consultant on the Rehabilitation Unit at Saint Marys Hospital, on a consultation service at Saint Marys or Rochester Methodist hospitals, or at Mayo Clinic.

Attendance is required at PM&R clinical conferences, PM&R Grand Rounds, and resident self-directed learning groups.

Method of Evaluation:

Evaluation criteria include students' history taking and physical examination skills and patient presentation and management skills. Honors are available.
