Laboratory Medicine & Pathology -- Anatomic Pathology - Rochester
Description:
This clerkship offers full participation in the activities of a surgical pathology laboratory at Mayo Clinic in either Rochester Methodist Hospital or Saint Marys Hospital. Students may elect to spend one-to-two weeks assisting in autopsy pathology during this rotation.
Specific Goals:
- Become familiar with the workings of a large anatomic pathology practice, with an emphasis on the frozen section laboratory.
- Learn the principles of gross specimen examination, histologic interpretation of slides and clinicopathological correlations.
Activity Outline:
This clerkship emphasizes participation in the activities of the frozen section suites. In addition to gross specimen examination and slide interpretation, students will be introduced to the applications of ancillary diagnostic techniques such as biopsy interpretation, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. They are expected to attend some of the 10-15 conferences per week that involve the Department of Pathology. Students will make a ten- to fifteen-minute presentation at the end of their rotation. Individual initiative is emphasized.
Method of Evaluation:
The program coordinator and pathology staff complete performance evaluations. No tests are required. Honors are available.
