Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine -- Neurology - Rochester

Description:

Students will attend morning ward rounds at the Mayo Eugenia Litta Children’s Hospital.  Exposure to our ambulatory program will be through observing patients with the residents and faculty in the subspecialty and general child neurology clinics during the afternoons.  The special interests of our child neurology staff members include pediatric headache, sleep disorders, neurometabolic disorders, neuromuscular disorders, demyelinating disorders, movement disorders, and epilepsy.

Specific Goals:

  1. Becoming familiar with the neurological examination of infants and children.
  2. Learning about normal child development
  3. Enhancing awareness of the diagnosis and management of common pediatric neurological disorders
  4. Help the student carry out an in depth study of a topic in child neurology via the preparation of an annotated bibliography

Suggested Duration:

Four weeks

Availability:

Year round, one student per month

Activity Outline:

The hospital rounds in the morning start at 8 a.m.  The Child Neurology Team is composed of the attending child neurologist, child neurology and neurology residents, and one pediatric resident.  Patients are seen in consultation.  They are usually admitted to the general pediatric service or the intensive care units.  Besides bedside teaching, neurodiagnostic studies like magnetic resonance imaging scans, electromyography and electroencephalograms are reviewed, and their application to patients are discussed.  In the afternoons, there is an opportunity to work on a one on one basis with a consultant evaluating child neurology outpatients.

Weekly conferences that the student is expected to attend include the Monday Grand Rounds, Wednesday morning Hospital Conference, the Wednesday Child Neurology Conference, and the Friday Subspecialty Conference.

Method of Evaluation:

Formal written and face to face evaluations are performed at the conclusion of the rotation. The information is forwarded to the student’s medical school.  There are no tests or examinations.
