Admission Requirements:
Students who have a strong interest in a pediatric or internal medicine career are preferred.
Description:
Students are oriented on the first day of the elective to the usual schedule, which is shown below. Students are paired with the pediatric nephrology consultant who is responsible for inpatient consultations. Each day, students have the opportunity to evaluate new hospitalized children, to conduct evaluations on new outpatients, and to follow up on patients who are returning. Time is available to do literature reviews and make brief presentations.
Specific Goals:
- Develop basic skills in history taking and physical examination as they relate to pediatric nephrology.
- Learn the indications for, and develop knowledge of, diagnostic tests used in pediatric nephrology.
- Master the basic concepts of developmental renal physiology and understand the results of renal maturation on homeostasis.
- Understand the difference between nephrosis and nephritis and be able to develop a differential diagnosis for both conditions.
- Develop an algorithm for the basic approach to a child with acute renal failure.
- Distinguish the various forms of renal tubular acidosis.
- Learn to approach acute and chronic hypertension diagnostically and therapeutically.
- Develop an approach to children with urinary tract infections.
- Understand the consequences of, and therapeutic options available to, children with chronic renal failure.
Activity Outline:
Students participate in the workup of new and returning nephrology patients. They also attend appropriate nephrology and pediatric conferences where, on occasion, they present and discuss case histories. Students have access to textbooks and reprints in the pediatric library and the main medical library.
