Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine -- Allergy-Clinical Immunology - Rochester
Description:
Students are assigned to Mayo's outpatient pediatric allergy-clinical immunology service. This service functions as the primary evaluation point for allergy-immunology referrals of all types, including problems with allergies, asthma and immunodeficient states.
Students study under the direct supervision of two full-time clinical allergists. They observe residents and staff performing evaluations and are given the opportunity to conduct primary evaluations of outpatient allergy and clinical immunology problems. A collection of articles in allergy and immunology are presented to the student at the beginning of the elective for study and discussion.
Specific Goals:
- Develop familiarity with the clinical manifestations of common allergic/atopic conditions.
- Recognize potential immunodeficiency states.
- Develop skills in history taking and the physical examination of infants, children and adolescents with allergic/atopic and immunodeficiency conditions.
- Obtain exposure to commonly used clinical diagnostic tests.
Activity Outline:
Students participate in workup and plan evaluations, follow patients to appropriate testing procedures, and participate in final consultations and treatment. They also attend teaching conferences in the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and the Division of Allergic Diseases.
Method of Evaluation:
Students are evaluated on their ability to:
- Obtain significant information while taking histories and conducting physical examinations of patients with allergies and immunological reactions.
- Take their relevant findings and construct an appropriate plan for further evaluation of these patients.
- Discuss the professional articles provided during the elective.
A performance review is provided at two weeks and four weeks into the elective concerning students' enthusiasm and participation.
