Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine -- Adolescent Medicine - Rochester
Description:
This clerkship acquaints students with the common medical problems and normal physical and mental health of adolescents.
Specific Goals:
- Develop an understanding of the pathophysiology and management of the maladaptive adolescent.
- Learn about recognition and treatment of chemically abusive adolescents and other adolescents with common behavioral problems.
- Gain experience diagnosing and managing the gynecologic problems of adolescent girls, including menstrual cycle disorders, birth control, infectious diseases and disorders of the breast.
- Diagnose and manage medical problems in adolescent patients.
Activity Outline:
Students participate in the medical care of outpatient adolescents at the Community Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Service (CPAMS) and the Generose Child and Adolescent Psychiatric units at Saint Marys Hospital.
The clerkship also includes seminars and lectures on issues in adolescent medicine and gynecology that occur during the rotation. Bibliographies, selected readings, and audiovisual educational materials are available for student use and are used to supplement case & related teachings.
Method of Evaluation:
A standard written evaluation is completed. Students receive verbal feedback from the consultant.
