Pain Medicine - Rochester
Description:
Students will observe and participate in all aspects of pain management as a member of the Inpatient Pain Service Team under the supervision of a consultant from the Department of Anesthesiology/Pain Medicine. Emphasis will be placed on the evaluation and formulation of treatment plans for hospitalized patients with pain control problems both as a consultative service and acute postoperative service via management of epidural and peripheral catheters. Exposure to interventional and non-interventional modalities will occur.
Specific Goals:
- Develop skill in evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic pain conditions.
- Obtain experience with or exposure to interventional pain management techniques.
- Develop skill in calculating opioid conversion equivalents.
- Gain an understanding for the use of adjunctive pain medications.
- Obtain experience in the management of epidural and peripheral catheters.
- Obtain exposure to fluoroscopic-guided procedures.
- Read/interpret spine x-rays and other radiographic studies to help formulate a treatment plan.
Activity Outline:
Students will work with the Inpatient Pain Service Team including an anesthesiology resident, pain fellow, nurse practitioner, and nurses under the direction of the Pain Medicine Consultant. The student is expected to attend didactic programs provided by the Division of Pain Medicine during the rotation.
Method of Evaluation:
Grades will be based on clinical performance during the rotation.
Other:
One student per rotation for 2-4 weeks.
