Otorhinolaryngology - Rochester

Description:

The senior elective in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery is three to four weeks in length. This elective gives students experience with a wide range if pathological conditions encountered in the head and neck region. Each week, students are assigned to a different consultant in ENT. In addition, they receive a general overview of the surgical treatment of these disorders. The elective includes exposure to the areas of otology, rhinology, head and neck cancer surgery, laryngology, maxillofacial trauma and facial cosmetic surgery.

Specific Goals:

  1. Develop an understanding of the medical problems diagnosed and treated in the areas of otology, rhinology, pediatric otolaryngology, facial plastic surgery and head and neck surgery.
  2. Become familiar with the surgical treatments of the above areas, including maxillofacial trauma and facial cosmetic surgery.
  3. Become more proficient in examining the head and neck region, using indirect laryngoscopy and other diagnostic techniques.
  4. Improve history taking skills regarding the symptoms and findings encountered in patients with head and neck pathology.

Activity Outline:

Students are expected to actively participate on the service.  They may spend several nights and a weekend in the hospital when the otorhinolaryngology service is covering maxillofacial trauma call. Students make rounds twice a day with their assigned consultant's resident and scrub on all surgical cases. When making hospital rounds with the consultant, students may be asked to present patients to their consultant.

When working in the clinic, students take a history and perform an otolaryngologic examination on at least four patients a day. These cases are presented to the consultant.

Students attend all conferences and courses that are given during the otolaryngology/head and neck surgery rotation. A syllabus of assigned readings is given to each student when their rotation begins.
