Obstetrics and Gynecology -- Gynecologic Surgery
- Rochester
Description:
Students participate in preoperative evaluations and workups, intraoperative procedures and the postoperative care of patients who present benign and neoplastic gynecologic surgical processes. Students are assigned to one of Mayo's staff gynecologic surgeons during the clerkship depending on their preference for an experience in oncology, female urology or infertility.
Specific Goals:
- Increase exposure to surgical gynecology by participating directly in one of several high-volume gynecologic surgical services.
- Become more familiar with the surgical management of vulvar, endometrial, cervical and ovarian cancers, as well as benign conditions such as pelvic relaxation, endometriosis, urinary incontinence, chronic pelvic pain and tubal occlusion.
Activity Outline:
On arrival, students become members of the surgical team and participate in morning and afternoon ward work rounds. On surgical days, students accompany residents to the operating suites at 7:30 a.m. and participate in the procedures scheduled for that day. On alternate days, students accompany staff surgeons on hospital postoperative rounds and clinic preoperative consultations.
Method of Evaluation:
Evaluation is based on several criteria, including patient care, amount of knowledge, personal qualities, maturity and motivation.
