Neurosurgery - Rochester

Description:

The neurosurgery service at Mayo is a busy clinical service, giving students ample opportunity to observe a wide variety of routine and complex neurosurgical diseases and operations. Formal teaching occurs at multiple conferences throughout the week, including a Monday morning didactic conference, a Wednesday morning neurology/neurosurgery conference, and Saturday morning neuro-oncology and neurosurgery conferences.

Typically, students rotate on a neurosurgery consultant's service for one week with experience on four different services during the one month elective. In addition to formal conferences, there is a daily exchange between students, residents and staff regarding patient management. Students are also encouraged to accompany the consultant in the clinic for exposure to outpatient neurosurgery and to participate with the service resident in the early morning and evening work rounds.

Specific Goals:

  1. Gain a general appreciation of all aspects of neurosurgery and the interface of neurology and neurosurgery.
  2. Become familiar with the surgical treatment of neurologic disease.
  3. Obtain first-hand knowledge of the training program in neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic.

Activity Outline:

Students function as an integral part of each service and participate in daily rounds and patient care. They may scrub as second assistants during operative procedures or observe a variety of operations in several operating rooms during the surgical day.

Method of Evaluation:

Written reports are provided by each consultant who works with the students. Specific criteria include interest, enthusiasm for acquiring new information, and participation in all aspects of patient care, including work rounds with the service's residents.
