Internal Medicine -- Infectious Diseases - Rochester

Description:

The infectious diseases clerkship consists of daily hospital rounds with bedside teaching, patient workups and management, and attendance at infectious diseases education lectures. Students are expected to make daily rounds with the consultant and residents on the service. They perform many of the duties of an internal medicine resident while under close supervision by a resident in internal medicine and a fellow in infectious diseases. Students are expected to work up one patient daily (except Sunday) and follow them through their hospital stay. Students are required to make daily progress notes in the medical chart and formulate a plan of care, which is reviewed with the medical resident.

Specific Goals:

  1. Develop and improve history taking and physical examination skills.
  2. Learn to organize and clearly present the pertinent points of a medical examination.
  3. Learn the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.
  4. Learn the approach to, and acquire some experience in, infectious disorders.
  5. Review and gain experience in the use of antimicrobial agents.
  6. Gain experience in general internal medicine.
  7. Learn how to use the medical literature in problem solving.
