Internal Medicine -- Gastroenterology Inpatient - Rochester

Description:

Students are responsible for working as clinical clerks on the gastroenterology services. They admit patients and follow them under the guidance of an internal medicine resident and consultant in gastroenterology. Students work up six cases per week with the resident on call. They take in-hospital call every fourth night. Procedures are performed as appropriate.

Specific Goals:

  1. Gain knowledge of and experience with internal medicine and digestive diseases.
  2. Refine skills related to history taking and physical examination.
  3. Learn a problem-oriented approach for histories, physical examinations and progress notes (as used in the hospital setting).
  4. Plan necessary laboratory tests.
  5. Plan treatment and long-term care. Write orders (countersigned by resident).

Activity Outline:

In the morning, students in gastroenterology attend hospital rounds and scheduled morning conferences in clinical gastroenterology. In the afternoon, students may work up selected new admissions to the hospital on the GI service under the supervision of the resident. Time also may be available for computer literature searches and library reference work on diseases relating to patients seen on the service.

Method of Evaluation:

Consultants on each service, with input from all of the internal medicine residents who work with students, submit written performance evaluations. Performance is discussed with students at the end of the rotation.
