Internal Medicine -- Endocrinology - Rochester

Description:

The endocrine elective is an outpatient experience. During the elective, students will be exposed to the consultative practice of endocrinology and will participate in the evaluation and management of a broad spectrum of endocrine disorders. The time spent in the Endocrine Clinic will be divided between the General Endocrine Clinic, which focuses on thyroid and bone/calcium disorders, and the Metabolism Clinic, where you will evaluate patients with diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and nutritional disorders.

Specific Goals:

  1. Develop proficiency in the clinical assessment of common endocrine disorders.
  2. Refine the ability to interpret endocrine tests and synthesize clinical data into a differential diagnosis based on an understanding of the pathophysiology of endocrine disorders.
  3. Develop an understanding of the diagnostic assessment and management of common endocrine disorders.

Activity Outline:

The students can elect to spend two to four weeks in the outpatient endocrine clinic. The outpatient experience will be equally divided between the Endocrine and Metabolism Clinics. Special requests from students to focus the elective on either the Endocrine Clinic or Metabolism Clinic will be granted whenever possible.

During the Endocrine Clinic experience, students will have an opportunity to participate in the performance of endocrine consultations. Depending on the case, the discussion with the supervising consultant will focus on data gathering, physical examination skills specific to endocrine disorders, interpretation of endocrine tests, development of a differential diagnosis and diagnostic assessment, and development of a therapeutic plan.

Students are encouraged to attend Endocrine Grand Rounds and the endocrine case conferences.

Method of Evaluation:

The supervising consultant and fellow will assess performance and provide feedback to the student.
