Description:
The student will see patients with a faculty member or chief resident in Gynecology clinic, evaluate each patient, present to the preceptor and perform appropriate examination under the preceptor’s supervision. The student will perform simulated endometrial biopsy, vulvar/vaginal biopsy, colposcopy, colposcopic biopsy, ECC, LEEP, IUD insertion, diaphragm fitting, and other procedures. Competence in performing these procedures will be evaluated. If appropriate, the student will participate in procedures done in the clinical setting. The student will complete 2 presentations on clinically related topics of interest. The student will attend all appropriate departmental conferences available during the rotation. If the students desires, they may begin a mentored research project in a field of interest.
Specific Goals:
At the end of the rotation, the student will:
- Gain experience in the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for various gynecologic conditions through direct patient care
- Expand basic knowledge with reading materials and case discussions as well as direct patient care
- Focus knowledge on designated topics presented at appropriate conferences/sessions
- Enhance interpersonal skills and professional conduct in female patient encounter setting
- Hone procedural skills using simulation and trainer stations as well as direct patient contact
- Develop triage skills, indications for inpatient vs. outpatient management and referral for specialty/subspecialty consultation.
Activity Outline:
Students learn how to obtain appropriate gynecologic histories and the proper technique for gynecologic examinations, including obtaining cervical Papanicolaou smears and performing bimanual examinations. By the end of the clerkship, students should understand proper breast examination, indications for mammography, and the evaluation of and treatment for breast lesions. Students also observe and become familiar with the indications and techniques for colposcopy and laparoscopy.
Method of Evaluation:
- The student will receive a written evaluation from each of the faculty preceptors based on fund of knowledge, procedural skills and interpersonal skills: total value 50% of grade
- The student’s presentations will be evaluated based on topic understanding, level of complexity of discussion and practical use of the knowledge: total value of 2 presentations: 20% of grade
- Completion of procedural OSCES on endometrial biopsy, vulvar/vaginal biopsy, colposcopy, colposcopic biopsy, ECC, LEEP, IUD insertion, diaphragm fitting, hysteroscopy: total value 30% of grade
- Mid-rotation and end-of-rotation feedback session will be scheduled with course director
- The student will be provided with access to appropriate mentorship and research opportunities in the specialty area if desired
