Dental Specialties -- General - Rochester

In the general clerkship in dental specialties, students spend one week with consultants and their residents in each of the subspecialty areas of dentistry. If the clerkship is limited to one of the subspecialty areas, students take their elective with the consultants in that subspecialty. Students examine patients with the staff and residents and have the opportunity to participate in discussion, diagnosis and treatment planning. Students also may observe treatment being performed and post-treatment results on recall patients.

Specific Goals:

1. Gain competence in evaluating patients with oral and orofacial problems.
2. Become familiar with dentistry and its subspecialty areas by observing patient care, hospital rounds, seminars and teaching conferences.
3. Gain exposure to didactic material through seminar participation and library assignments.

Activity Outline:

Clinic hours for the Department of Dental Specialties are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Seminars and hospital rounds normally begin at 7 or 7:30 a.m. Clerks are given their daily schedule by their assigned consultant. One day is scheduled in each of the following clinical areas: oral diagnosis, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics. If scheduling permits and the student is interested, a full week may be spent in one of the four subspecialty sections. The objectives and course experiences provided by each section are outlined on the following pages.

Method of Evaluation:

Evaluation is described to students during a discussion at the end of the clerkship. Written evaluation is provided, if requested.
