Neurology
- Arizona
Description:
This clerkship takes place at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale and hospitals in Scottsdale, Arizona. Students are supervised directly by consultants, in both the outpatient clinic and the hospital services.
Specific Goals:
- Refine skills in conducting neurological examinations.
- Learn how to arrive at an anatomic localization of different neurological problems and synthesize differential diagnoses.
- Learn how to select the appropriate sequence of laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures.
- Learn the utility and limitations of EEG, EMG and other neurological diagnostic tests.
- Manage common neurological problems in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Activity Outline:
In the outpatient clinic, students are expected to perform a history and physical examination on two patients daily. After reviewing the cases with the consultant, students assist in ordering tests and procedures and are present when the patients return at the conclusion of the workup. In the hospital service, students attend rounds with their supervising consultant and perform histories and physical examinations on new admissions and consultations. Opportunities are available to perform neurological procedures, such as lumbar punctures. Students may also request the opportunity to observe the activities of the EEG, EMG, neurovascular, autonomic and movement disorder laboratories. Night call may be expected during the hospital portion of the rotation.
While the emphasis of the clerkship is general neurology, students have the opportunity to gain added experience in the fields of movement disorders, demyelinating disease, neuromuscular diseases, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease, cognitive disorders and headache, if they wish.
Method of Evaluation:
Consultants who work with students provide written performance evaluations.
