Description:
The outpatient dermatology rotation is offered to help students acquire basic knowledge of dermatology. Staff consultants and senior resident associates serve as preceptors.
Specific Goals:
- Gather clinical information through a dermatologic history and physical examination.
- Recognize primary and secondary skin lesions with ease, classify rashes and develop a differential diagnosis.
- Know and be able to discuss and identify 100 common skin diseases. (List will be provided during rotation).
- Become familiar with dermatologic procedures: potassium hydroxide examination for fungus/yeast, Wood's lamp examination and scabies preparation.
- Observe various dermatologic procedures, outpatient surgery, skin biopsies, patch testing, wet dressings and Goeckerman therapy.
- Observe dermatologic practice and nursing procedures on the outpatient, inpatient and consultative services.
- Develop an awareness of dermatologic literature, resources, nursing care, treatment modalities, dermatopathology and immunopathology.
- Observe the diversity of dermatologic conditions.
- Understand the clinical and pathological correlation of dermatologic diseases.
Activity Outline:
- During this clerkship, students participate in outpatient and inpatient dermatologic care. They are taught and supervised by consultants and residents. They also observe dermatologic surgery, observe outpatient nursing procedures, and do independent study assignments.
- Students will be asked to prepare and submit one case report with the Dermatology staff physician of their choice.
