Program Description
Mayo Clinic’s four-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship trains academic cardiovascular physicians. After completing two years of core rotations, you may complete your fellowship training with one of the following options:
- Two years each of research and clinical electives in a focused subspecialty area
- Two years in interventional cardiology
- Two years in electrophysiology
The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship offers:
- Comprehensive preparation for a scholarly career in cardiovascular medicine
- Cardiovascular fellow responsibility and autonomy in patient care management and procedures (There areno private patients or private attendings.)
- Extensive hands-on experience with all cardiovascular procedural skills
- Diverse patient population composed of local, regional, national and international patients
- Comprehensive didactic curriculum and hands-on physical examination teaching series
- Highly selective fellows with a 92 percent pass rate on ABIM certifying examinations over the past 3 years
- Numerous research opportunities with guaranteed research time
- Separate tracks available for those interested in a more comprehensive research career, including clinician investigator and NIH pathways
- Fully computerized medical record system integrated between inpatient and outpatient settings
- Options for subspecialty training in interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, nuclear cardiology, advanced echocardiography, congenital heart disease and epidemiolgy
- Elective opportunities at Mayo Clinic in Florida and Mayo Clinic in Arizona
- Reasonable call schedule and duties hours
- Extensive ancillary support

Accreditation
The training program fulfills the requirements for training as stated by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Certification
You will be eligible to take the American Board of Internal Medicine’s subspecialty examination in Cardiovascular Disease upon completion of the fellowship.
Program History
The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship began in 1961, and since that time, more than 359 physicians have completed training. It is anticipated that nine fellows will complete training in this program annually.
