Program Description
If you are interested in advanced training in interventional cardiology,
Mayo Clinic offers a two-year option focused on training in clinical
practice and research in that subspecialty. You can participate
in this training in one of two ways:
- You may spend two years in interventional cardiology
as an elective to finish Mayo's Cardiovascular Diseases Subspecialty
Fellowship Program
- You may take the two-year Interventional Cardiology
Subspecialty Fellowship as an independent program after you complete
at least three years of accredited cardiovascular diseases training
at another institution
In either case, you will spend the first 12 months in a catheter-based
research laboratory. Your research will include:
- Pathophysiology of restenosis
- Vessel response to injury
- Application of new interventional devices in
animal models
- Local drug delivery approaches for gene therapy
Then you will spend the last 12 months in the clinical intervention
laboratory, gaining experience in:
- Mitral balloon alvuloplasty
- Directional atherectomy
- Doppler flow
- Intracoronary stents
- Intravascular ultrasound
- Laser angioplasty
- Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty
- Rotablator
