Clinical Research Training Program

The fellow is responsible for performing and interpreting echocardiographic studies with the responsible consultant. There is a comprehensive handout which the fellow will be expected to review. Regular teaching sessions will be given by staff echocardiography consultants.

A typical schedule in the Echocardiography Fellowship Program includes the following:

  • Three to four days per week, the fellow is training in procedures in the Echocardiography Laboratory. The fellow is expected to perform an echocardiographic examination on each patient coming to the Echocardiography Laboratory. The fellow is expected to interpret the results of the procedure and enter these results into a computer format.
  • One to two days per week, the fellow is expected to pursue clinical research in the area of echocardiography. The Echocardiography Laboratory at Mayo Clinic has a large database, which has produced extensive publications under the guidance of Dr. James Seward, the Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory.

Didactic Training
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are integral parts of this fellowship. Daily noon conferences cover a wide variety of topics.

Research Training
You are required to conduct some type of scholarly activity during your fellowship. Your research can be in the form of a chart review, a case report or an original investigation.

Call Frequency
The residency call rotation is different for each rotation. Mayo Clinic College of Medicine follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of your program training. You will be evaluated formally by your supervising faculty member after each clinical rotation and will meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.
