Program Description
The management of patients undergoing cardiothoracic and major
vascular surgery are some of the most interesting and challenging
cases in anesthesiology. These patients are typically older and
have complex co-morbidity's. Furthermore, the physiologic changes
that occur, particularly during cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary
bypass, are unique. For those pursuing an academic career in cardiovascular
and thoracic (CVT) anesthesia, or for individuals who will manage
these cases in the private setting, the Cardiovascular and Thoracic
Anesthesiology Fellowship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester offers
superb training and a range of opportunities.
Given our surgical volume at Mayo and the fact that typically only
two CVT fellows are accepted annually, the opportunities at Mayo
are virtually unlimited. Some fellows have sought training tailored
to the cardiothoracic and vascular practices seen in the private
setting, others have concentrated in echocardiography and obtained
certification, worked on clinical or laboratory-based research projects,
or focused on the congenital practice. There is also a wealth of
opportunities related to thoracic or major vascular surgery.
The CVT anesthesia fellowship at Mayo-Rochester leaves individuals
superbly trained to manage cardiothoracic and major vascular surgical
cases. The faculty and the program are dynamic and offer a range
of opportunities that can be tailored to individual interests. A
CVT anesthesia fellowship at the Mayo Clinic is an opportunity to
build and advance a career.
Additional Training
While most fellows spend a single year, it is possible to take
additional time depending on interests. A two-year fellowship within
CVT, or combined with Critical Care, appeals to some individuals.
A more extended research experience is also possible and moneys
are available to support those efforts.
Some areas of active investigation related to the CVT practice
include: coagulation, cardiac muscle physiology and pharmacology,
physiology of endothelium and platelets, cardiopulmonary bypass
and cerebral physiology, resuscitation and monitoring, echocardiography,
thoracic analgesia, and outcomes research and information management.
For those with research interest, there are also a variety of opportunities
outside the division that can be integrated with clinical cardiothoracic
training.
Department & Faculty
Clinical excellence requires experience. In 1999, the Cardiothoracic
and Vascular Anesthesia Division, Mayo-Rochester, did more than
2,600 cardiac, 1,500 thoracic, and 1,600 vascular surgical cases
at Saint Mary's Hospital. Of the cardiac cases, 345 were for congenital
heart disease. Intraoperative echocardiography was done for more
than a thousand procedures.
We also have a very successful cardiopulmonary transplant program,
which places us in the top 10% of US programs in both volume and
patient outcomes. While the cardiothoracic practice is busy, the
workload of our residents and fellows is reasonable because of sufficient
staffing. It is typical for Cardiothoracic Anesthesia fellows to
be assigned to a specific operating room for the first 2-3 months
of training. Following that, the fellow plays an increasingly supervisory
role, gains far greater experience, and can begin to pursue a range
of interests directed toward his or her career goals.
Mayo uses a Perioperative Information Management System. In the
CVT division, the anesthesia record is also electronic. Patient
data, management protocols, procedure descriptions, and topic discussions
are immediately available online. The intraoperative workstation
in each operating room is intranet and internet connected. This
can be used to access library resources intraoperatively, is an
extraordinary resource as a database, and is a model for perioperative
information management that will benefit the trainee for the rest
of their career.
Application Process
How to Apply

In addition to the standard application materials required by MSGME, this program requires the following additional supporting materials to be submitted with your online application:
- Copies of ABA-ASA In-training examination scores
- Letter of recommendation from anesthesiology residency program director
Applications for each academic year, which begins in July, should be completed by December 31.
If you are considered for an appointment, you will be asked to visit Mayo Clinic Rochester for an interview. Interviews are usually conducted from November through January.
