Imaging techniques are a crucial component in breast cancer screening and diagnosis. Training programs in breast imaging are commonly referred to as "women's imaging" fellowships.
With the increasing focus on cancer diagnosis and treatment, Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., offers a one-year Breast Imaging Fellowship Program under the instruction of specially trained radiologists whose clinical and research interests lie within breast imaging. Recognizing that many individuals with interests in Breast Imaging have other interests, the program allows individuals to supplement their training with electives in other body imaging areas for up to 50% of their clinical time.
Within radiology, the subspecialty area of breast imaging focuses on the interpretation and performance of screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided biopsies, pre-operative localizations, stereotactic biopsies, ductography and dedicated breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
There is high demand throughout the United States for radiologists with fellowship training in breast imaging. One study published in 1997 showed that graduates of radiology fellowship programs that incorporated some element of breast imaging in their training experienced a 100 percent employment rate, compared with an 86 percent employment rate for graduates in all radiology fellowships in general for the same period.
The increasing number of women's health-care courses and initiatives being offered in both the educational and research arenas are indications that this trend will continue.
Program History
The Breast Imaging Fellowship in Scottsdale, Ariz., began in 2002. Usually, one or two individuals will complete training in this program annually.
