RESIDENCY OVERVIEW

The four-year anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP) training program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester offers unparalleled training in anatomic and clinical pathology for a successful career in private practice or academic pathology.  A three-year AP-only or CP-only track is also available.  The residency program appoints five residents per year.  For those interested in devoted time for basic, translational or clinical research, a Clinician-Investigator Training Program (CITP) and a Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) are available.

Some of the highlights of training in our program include:

  • Access to material received through our highly active surgical pathology consult practice (over 60,000 expert consultations per year).
  • Access to laboratory specimens received through our rapidly growing national reference laboratory.
  • Access to the consultative expertise and cutting edge technologies required to evaluate those specimens. 
  • Small residency class size (20 total residents) relative to faculty size (40 AP faculty, 58 CP faculty)
  • Extensive curriculum of lectures, conferences, journal clubs and seminars.
  • Intensive training in the unique Mayo frozen section laboratory.  The frozen section method was developed at Mayo and has been successfully utilized ever since.  Learn more about our frozen section laboratory through the rotation description and FAQ links.
  • Unique, multiple all-day seminar series in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology “Leadership and Management Course”.  Mayo Clinic is committed to training future leaders in medicine and has worked with our department to develop a revolutionary curriculum in leadership and management specifically for pathology residents and fellows.
  • Numerous fellowship training programs offered in the department.
  • Elective rotations in Mayo Clinic-Scottsdale and Mayo Clinic-Jacksonville.

Each year, the division of anatomic pathology evaluates over 165,000 surgical and consult specimens, and performs approximately 500 autopsies.  The annual cytopathology workload is over 125,000 specimens per year.  Over 13,000,000 laboratory tests are performed in the Mayo Clinic laboratories annually.

Accreditation
This residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Certification
After completing the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester , you will be eligible to take the certification examination offered by the American Board of Pathology (ABP).
