Program Description
“The environments of space and aviation provide significant challenges, such as microgravity, radiation exposure, G-forces, emergency ejection injuries, and hypoxic conditions. Neither primary care nor surgical specialties address these issues with the depth needed to manage the health care of military and civilian aviators and space explorers. Aerospace medicine physicians are trained in the physiological implications of exposure to these environments and appropriate medical management with the aim of maximizing crew, passenger, and public safety.” *
The goal of the Mayo Aerospace Medicine Fellowship is to train academic aerospace medicine specialists who will be leaders, master clinicians, educators, and researchers advancing the field of aeromedical science and aerospace safety while expertly serving the aerospace population clinically.
During this program, fellows will receive specialty training in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disorders associated with aerospace environments and with the adaptive systems designed to enhance performance and support life under such conditions.
During the fellowship, you will learn to:
- Manage the health status of individuals working in all aspects of the aerospace environment
- Promote aerospace passenger health, safety and comfort
- Facilitate optimum care of patients transported in the aerospace environment
- Apply human factors/ergonomic concepts to the aerospace environment
- Promote aerospace operational safety and mishap prevention
- Interpret, integrate and/or perform aeromedical research
Accreditation
The Aerospace Medicine Fellowship Program is pursuing accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Eligibility
All applicants must have completed at least three years of an ABMS accredited residency in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry, Neurology, and/or Emergency Medicine and be board eligible or board certified in one of those specialties.
The two-year program, for fellows without an MPH, includes an academic year pursuing an MPH at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health; and a practicum year of clinical training and research at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. If the candidate has an MPH, they may apply for the practicum year only.
Program History
The Aerospace Medicine Fellowship was established at Mayo Clinic in 2008. The program will accept its first trainee to complete the program in the summer of 2010. Going forward, it is anticipated that one fellow will complete this training annually.
